For that budget hard to get any car in the price range. Stay away from the cheaper Fords and Chevy's in that price range. Hard to get much in the range. Won't be able to find or afford a Subaru like the guy above mentioned or a Subaru Impreza they are hard to find cheap and usually a lot more than that. You might be able to find a decent small Toyota or Honda. Maybe a little civic or might be able and get lucky to find a Honda accord. Try not to buy from a dealership since they add a lot of extra fees in. Use the cash you have and buy from a personal owner instead. Check the Internet and news paper. Can't go wrong with any small Honda or Toyota or even Nissan for that matter. Maybe a civic, accord, sentra, corolla...just check online see which one you like best and go test drive it to see if it fits what you want out of a car. Well good luck.

$3700 is not that much... I'd advise to add a couple more thousands and look for Corolla or Civic; with this price for gas it's the good choice. I don't know if you will be able to find 1998 or newer car for that price, but either of these two cars even if older than 1998 will last provided it was maintained well.

A 1998 or 1999 Subaru Legacy would be a great choice. The 2000 came in a new body style and are a little more expensive.

The Legacy 2.5gt with a 165hp motor can be found for under 4000 with not too much mileage. They're fun to drive, easy and cheap to maintain as well as looking really good with the factory wing. Because all wheel drive is standard they are incredibly safe cars that handle well in almost any weather condition. The flat four motors are economical, my 1998 2.2 sohc gets 28 mpg highway and it still provides robust torque for traffic conflicts or humiliating a modded civic at a stoplight.

If you need more room go with a wagon, if you want something sportier go with an Impreza, it shares the same drivetrain and engines but comes in a coupe as well. Then again, it is possible to have a legacy coupe.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Honestly, anything american will always be cheaper... short and long run, maintenance, price, etc. If it has to be foriegn, choose toyota corrolla. $3700 could buy a ford taurus, crown victoria, grand marquis.

have an independent inspector inspect the vehicle AND take it to a dealership for them to pull up vehicle's maintanance history on it ( I would do this only if the car is over 10k or so but gotta have the independent inspection ) - it will buy you some peace of mind and make sure you not buying a car that has some fatal ( economically fatal that is ) flaw ...

You dont.

So your best bet is to do some research. Try to get as much information about the vehicle as possible. Does it have maintenance records showing oil changes, etc? You can search online at a few different places to find out whether the car has ever been wrecked, stolen, etc.

Past that - the best bet is to take it for a nice long test drive, and either take it to someone, or have them come with you that knows about cars - ask your family and friends if they know anyone. Have them give you an honest opinion of the mechanical condition of the car, this isn't a gaurantee, but it definitely helps head off the biggest pieces of crap.

Never buy a car that looks like too good of a deal - there is usually going to be a hidden catch. And never be in too much of a hurry to buy a car - look around, and don't just fall in love with something.

The fact is, cars break, but a lot of it has to do with how well they are taken care of. A lot of sportier cars on used lots are a bad idea, because they have probably been ragged out pretty bad (there are always exceptions of course) but usually people don't buy a 380Z to drive the speed limit.

Look at lots of cars - look at them online, compare prices, features, and most importantly - get somebody that knows what they are doing to give it a good look over before you buy it.

This really depends on the Vehicle you are purchasing....like with many of the Hondas right now, there are some Incentives that allow us to go well below MSRP....on new anyway.

Used is a little different, but you can see a cars value compared to the selling price by using KBB (Kelly Blue Book) or the NADA Site and seeing what the trade value of the vehicle is....compared to the price you are buying it for....and each place you talk to (Dealers) are different.

What vehicle are you interested in buying...that would help me tell you how much leeway you might really have...

Best way is to take it to a reliable mechanic and have them look it over. They normally charge an hour ($50-$100) for this service and it could save you in the long run as good mechanics will also tell you of problem areas for the specific car.

You don't- If you have to buy from a dealer, go to CarMax- you may not get the best price, but you won't get ripped off, and you won't get a piece of junk, they go through their cars pretty thoroughly.
